When heavy storms hit, it’s not uncommon for garden drains to become clogged with debris. This can lead to standing water in your yard, which can damage your landscaping and even lead to flooding in your home. Luckily, unclogging a garden drain is a relatively easy task that can be done with a few basic tools.

Step 1: Locate the Drain

The first step in unclogging a garden drain is to locate it. In most cases, the drain will be located near the lowest point in your yard. If you’re not sure where the drain is, look for a small grate or cover in the ground.

Step 2: Remove the Drain Cover

Once you’ve located the drain, the next step is to remove the cover. This can usually be done by using a flathead screwdriver to pry it up. Be careful not to damage the cover, as it will need to be replaced later.

Step 3: Clear the Debris

With the cover removed, you’ll be able to see the debris that’s clogging the drain. Use a small shovel or trowel to clear out as much of the debris as you can. Be sure to remove any large pieces of debris, such as sticks or leaves, that are blocking the flow of water.

Step 4: Flush the Drain

Once you’ve removed as much debris as possible, the next step is to flush the drain. You can do this by running a hose into the drain and turning on the water. This will help to clear out any remaining debris and ensure that the drain is flowing properly.

Step 5: Replace the Drain Cover

Finally, replace the drain cover and make sure it’s securely in place. This will help to prevent debris from entering the drain in the future.

By following these simple steps, you can easily unclog a garden drain after a storm and prevent damage to your landscaping and home.
